Natural Herbal combinations that increase telomere length

The following paper is the final result of of almost a year of research and preparation. The information shows a major link between the mind and anti-aging. Being a leading scientist, as well as author on anti-aging, and having written more than 4 books covering more than 1,500 pages on human longevity during the past 10 years, I am very well versed in the latest scientific literature and studies involving methods that lengthen lifepsan, as well as the methods used in the ancient science known as Alchemy, although I have yet to develop the famed red powder that extends life. If you were to look at all the anti-aging studies and research into longevity (meta data anlaysis), the trend is starting to show that that substances that extend lifespan are substances that preserve neurocognition (brain functioning) well into old age (The Scientific Quest for Lasting Youth: Prospects for Curing Aging).  Hence a stronger mind  creates a stronger will to live.  Simply put, substances that can preserve the brain's functions also have a positive side effect, they extend human life.  There are already studies that confirm that meditation (which is a mind exercise) can slow aging (Can meditation slow rate of cellular aging? Cognitive stress, mindfulness, and telomeres), (Zen meditation, Length of Telomeres, and the Role of Experiential Avoidance and Compassion).

These neurocognitive preservers are the most promising canidates for lengenthing lifespan.  One example, which I show in great depth in my book Foods, Herbs and Pharmaceuticals that Extend Lifespan. A Summary Of Over 200 Research Studies Proven To Lengthen Lifespan is the prescription drug Deprenyl. Deprenyl is commonly prescribed to imrpove mood and well being for people with depression. It also increases dopamine levels (Effect of low-dose treatment with selegiline on dopamine transporter). Dopamine is produced by our bodies, especially after exercise and is a substance that relieves depression (Dopamine, depression and antidepressants).

Deprenyl
Deprenyl has been shown in numerous studies to extend lifespan (Deprenyl increases the life span as well as activities of superoxide dismutase).  Because depression is a mental related disorder, it would only make sense that relieving or elimating depression enhances the strength of the mind, thus creating enhanced neurocognition properties.  This in turn would enhance lifespan.  This also means that as more and more supplements and substances are invented to extend lifespan, that the disease of depression will slowly be eradicated.  Simply put, when we have learned to solve the disease of aging, depression will also be solved.

Phenylbutyrate
Let's look at another promising substance called Phenylbutyrate. Phenylbutyrate was invented in Russia during the 1960's. It is only available by prescription. It is commonly sold under the name Buphenyl. Phenylbutyrate is commonly used to treat urea cycle problems. Excess urea in the body can contribute to a condition known as Gout. Excess urea also contributes to ammonia build up in the body, coming from excess nitrogen.  As I have explained in almost all of my published anti-aging books, excessive ammonia levels in the body, usually caused by eating excessive amounts of proteins, are one of the major causes of aging. The opposite also happens to be true, eating the right amount of proteins, such as from nuts actually extends lifespan.  The long lived Loma Linda community in southern california has a diet that consists of nuts, combined with a spiritual life, which contributes to their long lifespan (Secret of Eternal Youth; Teaching from the Centenarian Hot Spots (“Blue Zones”), (Health Benefits of Nut Consumption).

Phenylbutyrate has been scientifically proven to lower ammonia levels (Ammonia control in children with urea cycle disorders (UCDs); phase 2 comparison of sodium phenylbutyrate and glycerol phenylbutyrate). Because Phenylbutyrate is capable of passing the blood brain barrier, it allows for rapid absorption into the brain which is why it is a powerful neurocognitive protector (Ammonia Control and Neurocognitive Outcome Among Urea Cycle Disorder Patients Treated With Glycerol Phenylbutyrate).

When fruit flies were fed Phenylbutyrate it extended their life between 30% to 50% (PBA) (Kang et al., 2002). The research study found that their longevity came from Phenylbutyrate's ability to cause a dramatic increase in the fruit flies' gene expression.  This caused increases in their superoxide dismutase levels.  It is a well known fact in anti-aging research that the higher the body's superoxide dismutase levels, the longer the lifespan (Increased life span from overexpression of superoxide dismutase).

Below is a quote from the fruit fly research study "Feeding Drosophila throughout adulthood with phenylbutyrate significantly increased lifespan. Treatment for limited periods including early and late in adult life was effective" (Kang et al., 2002). This is quite a significant finding because the study also goes onto conclude that Phenylbutyrate works in both the young and old populations.  This means even if you are old that the effects of Phenylbutyrate will work.  This is also a major finding because there are a lot of anti-aging substances that work well on people under 45, but don't work well on people who are older then 45.  This means that  if human trials are conducted using Phenylbutyrate, it should show enhanced cognitive benefits in seniors. One of my most intensive books on anti-aging is titled Foods and Herbs that Extend Lifespan.  Most of the herbs and substances in this book extend lifespan on average 20% to 30%.  Phenylbutyrate is one of the rare substances that extends life up to 50%.  Although lifespan studies need to be conducted on humans to determine if the effects are the same, it is due to the fact that Phenylbutyrate is a neucognitive ehnancer that it most likely will prove to be a powerful anti-aging substance.

Instructions for using Phenylbutyrate
Phenylbutyrate should be taken with food and not with acidic drinks such as orange juice. Because Phenylbutyrate is a highly concentrated extract, it does not combine well with herbs.

Other substances that preserve neurocognitive function and lenghten lifespan include the following:

Berberine
This is one of my favorates which I take almost on a daily basis.  I have found that you can increase the effects of Berberine by combining it with 2 vitamin C tablets, 2 Vitamin E tablets (coated with cinnamon powder) and  1 potassium glutonate tablet.
This herb meets one of the anti-aging critera because it tastes bitter.  I have writtern an in-depth article previously showing how bitter foods are a sign that they are powerful anti-aging foods

What is Berberine and what do the published research studies say?

Prepared Berberine extract consists of a yellow bitter powder that comes from the roots and bark of the following: Oregon grape, goldenthread, goldenseal, barberry, tree turmeric and the traditional Chinese medicine Cortex Phellodendri (Phellodendron spp).

Scientific research studies on Berberine have shown Berberine decreases the production of beta-amyloid and the expression of beta-secretase in significant amounts (1).  Beta-amyloids are plaques that form on the brain and can impair neurocognitive function, and can also contribute to Alzheimers. In one study involving mice that had Alzheimer's, mice that were fed Berberine showed significant improvement in their learning and long-term memory recall (2).  Berberine is also a powerful cancer destroyer, reducing the proliferation of liver (3) colon (4) (5) melanoma (6) Wilms' tumor and (6) cancer cells.  Hence, taking the proper amount of Berberine may lower one's chance of contracting certain cancers.

My Personal Experiences taking Berberine
I have been taking Berberine for almost an entire year and found that my thinking is clearer and that it eliminates “brain fog”. Unlike coffee which gives a short bust of energy and then creates a “low” afterwards, Berberine does not have this effect.  The only side effect is a mild reduction of brainpower if I haven't taken it for a few days. I take Berberine for about 3 days on with a 2 to 4 day break in-between. As I explained earlier at the start of this section, I have found Berberine works extremly well when synergized.  Taking Berberine with 2 vitamin E capsules, 1 potassium glutonate capsule, 2 vitamin C tablets and a touch of cinnamon creates a powerful synergy.  Also adding 5 drops of Ormus to a cup of water and taking the above combination with the Berberine gives it even more powerful synergy because the Ormus boosts the absorption of the nutrients into the body more throughouly.  After taking this combination, the mind feels sharper, elevated and clear after taking this combination.  Another trick to make the effects of Berberine last longer on the body is to take it with Grapefruit juice.  This is rather an interesting combination because both Berberine and Grapefruit are both very bitter foods and bitter foods extend lifespan

Why A Clear Mind Creates a Strong Will to Live
Simply put, herbs that preserve cognitive functioning strengthen the mind and allow for clear and sharp thinking.  Recently published scientific studies have confirmed that the mind can affect how the body ages and possibly even reverse aging. Mind/body exercises such as Transcendal Meditation, Yoga and QI Gong have been scientifically proven to exhibit anti-aging effects. And meditation retreats have been proven to lengthen telomores (Telomere lengthening after three weeks of an intensive insight meditation retreat). Let's explore the scientific literature for proof.

Scientific Studies Confirming that Meditation Extends Lifespan
There are now some excellent scientific studies to date that show that mindfullnes exercises such as Yoga and Tai Chi lengthen lifespan. Mindfulness is a technique that focuses one's attention on breathing which then develops increased awareness of the present. It is a popular concept used in some Zen studies. These studies demonstrate that the increase in lifespan is occuring via the body's genes which are lengtehening the cell's telomores.  Hence we now know that the power of the mind can affect our genes.

Summary
Our genes are affected by focus and concentration. Telemores are one of the key markers for a longer lifespan. The longer your telemores, the longer your lifespan  .  Let's look further at the scientific evidence...

How Practicing QI Gong Lengthens Telomerase

It is a fact that the power of the mind can do amazing things, especially in the area of healing.  Hence, if we look at aging as a disease, the mind may be able to slow the rate at which we age.  A study titled: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Qigong Exercise on Fatigue Symptoms, which was published in October 2012 and conducted by T. Rainbow and collegues, found that qigong improved mental functioning and chronic fatigue symptoms.  One benefical side effect of this was increased telomerase activity. Hence, chronic fatigue or chronic fatigue syndrome may be a sign that the body has shorter telomerase (Athletes with exercise-associated fatigue have abnormally short muscle DNA telomeres).

Another large long term study, titled: Zen meditation, Length of Telomeres, and the Role of Experiential Avoidance and Compassion, which was conducted by Marta Alda and collegues and published in February 2016, analyzed the data from numerous studies involving the mind and its effects on the body and came to the following conclusions: Expert meditators exhibit longer telomeres compared to nonmeditators (Schutte and Malouff 2014; Epel et al. 2009a). The study included people from all socioeconomic backgrounds.  The study included meditators with a significantly lower salary compared to the comparison group.  This was due to the fact that some of them were Buddhist monks who had undertaken lifelong vows of poverty. Simply put, no matter how much money one had, telemore length was not affected.

Practice of mindfulness causes increases in telomerase (Lengacher et al. 2014). The mechanism responsible for telomere length via mindfulness exercises which causes individuals to experience less stress, anxiety, and depression (Schutte and Malouff 2014).  This in turn affects cortisol levels, which then influences telomerase activity.

It is a scientific fact that chronic long term stress reduces telomore length (Psychological Stress, Telomeres, and Telomeras) and that high cortisol levels cause one to age faster (Increased cortisol levels in aging).

Summary
Mindfullness Exercises reduce stress. This reduction of stress lengthens telomores and lowers cortisol levels.

What are the Primary Mechanisms that cause Anti-Aging from Practicing Meditaiton?

Mindfulness exercises such as Zen meditation may lengthen telomores. Mindfullness expercises give the mind a stronger ability to cope with stresful situations that an untrained mind would find frustrating.  They also help enhance acceptance of situations that may seem out of control. Hence, mindfulness exercises strengthen the mind.  When a stresfull situation presents itself, the mind is better prepared to cope with the challenge presented.  This would also allow one to better accept the conditions that one encounters.  This would mean that acceptance of life's challenges plays a major role in our health.

The Power of Acceptance Lengthens Telemores
The Emotional Freedom Technique includes a key emotion one expereinces in order to make the exercise work.  That emotion is total and unconditional acceptance (Emotional freedom techniques (EFT) as a practice for supporting chronic disease healthcare: a practitioners' perspective).  In scientific studies, acceptance has been found to predict a large number of life outcomes, such as general mental health, depression and anxiety and it has been applied successfully to several specifics including, smoking, pain, tinnitus, weight, diabetes management and coping with epilepsy and psychotic symptoms (Preliminary psychometric properties of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II: a revised measure of psychological inflexibility and experiential avoidance).

Hence practicing mindfullness enhances our ability to accept what is happening, thus reducing or eliminating emotional stress which shortens our telomeres.

Quote from the study "However, this study is one of the first to show that acceptance is related to telomere length"
Reference Zen meditation, Length of Telomeres, and the Role of Experiential Avoidance and Compassion

This shows that cellular perspectives can be influenced by mental health and behavioural therapies according to how people relate to their feelings and thoughts than by the form of those thoughts or feelings (for example , how negative they are).

Published studies have now proven that people who suffer from high anxiety show low mindfulness and compassion scores (Mindfulness and Self-Compassion in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Examining Predictors of Disability)

Summary
Mindfulness may help protect one from anxiety disorders (Hoge et al. 2013a,b).

Hence, learning to aovoid distressing or painful feelings allows one to experience awareness with understanding. Once again we see the effectivness of the Emotional Freedom Technique present here.  When practicing the Emotional Freedom Technique, one is honest with one's feelings.  This allows one to fully experience their feelings of distress or anxiety, easing the ability of one to fullly and uncondicitonally accepting oneself. This one simple gesture is the secret that provides deep and lasting healing.

How Meditation Affects our Genes

A scientific study showed that practicing intense mindfulness for one day by experienced meditators affected the genes that control inflammation and pain (Experienced Practitioners Reap Genetic Changes After a Day of Mindfulness Meditation). The effects were similar to taking anti-inflammatory drugs or pain-relieving medications. This is an interesting finding because control of pain also occurs via endorphins which are released via exercise (Endorphins and exercise)..  Our remote viewing project has found that when the body has more endorphins in it, such as after a 1 hour period of exercise, intuitive abilities are increased. Hence, this could explain why people who meditate are more intuitive on average, of which I show in greater detail, including published studies, in my book Remote Viewing. Hence future research may show that endorphins enhance intuition.  Let's get back to the research showing how the mind affects our genes.

In the research study, researchers divided participants into two groups. The first group consisted of 19 people who had practiced daily meditation for at least 3 years (experienced).  This group also performed 8 hours of intensive mindfulness practice during the one day of the study. The second group included 21 people with no experience with meditation.  This group spent 8 hours performing quiet leisure activities. Blood samples were taken before and after the sessions and than analyzed for biological factors.  The samples were examined for expression of genes that regulate circadian rhythms, histones (proteins in cells that attach to DNA) and inflammation. Researchers also took samples of the saliva of the participant's in the study to look at their cortisol levels.  Cortisol is an excellent marker of stress recovery time. All participants undertook a test putting them under acute stress to see what effect it had on their cortisol levels.

Results
The expert meditators showed major changes not shown in the second control group (inexperienced). The study found genes associated with inflammation and histones showed the strongest effects and reduced levels for two genes were associated with significant faster recovery from the stress test. There were no differences detected between the groups with respect to circadian rhythum genes.

Summary
The study concluded that a mechanism exists that explains beneficial effects from practicing meditation due to an influence in the genes that govern inflammatory disorders.  Hence this could be why meditation reduces allergies (Mind-Body Medicine and Immune System Outcomes: A Systematic Review)

Weather and Genes
Besides emotions, another influence on our genes is weather. A study published in September 2014 titled: Widespread seasonal gene expression reveals annual differences in human immunity and physiology and conducted by Xaquin Castro Dopico and colleagues, discovered the following:

A quarter of human genes (5,136 out of 22,822 genes) showed seasonal variation. Some genes were more active in the summer, and others more active in winter. The biggest changes were observed in white blood cells and adipose tissue, which affect the immune system. A six month shift was shown to exist between European and Australian patterns, due to the opposition of seasons. The variation of genetic activity also varied by latitude. In the UK, people's genes showed peak shifts occuring in April and October. In Gambia people’s genes showed changes during June and October (the rainy season).  Gambia is noted for its high infectious disease burden, showing that white blood cells come alive to fight infection during the rainy season. Hence, the immune system is closely related to our genes; ie the stronger the environmental extreme, the stronger our genes will respond.  The study also found that white blood cells were not the only substrate exhibiting seasonal peaks. Peaks also occurred in summer and winter that affected adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is composed of adipocytes whose primary function is to store energy in the form of fat. Because England is so close to the Latitude of the U.S., we can assume that the genes of people living in the United States also come alive during April.  This means that the immune system of the body is activated by the body's genes each April.  This would put an added strain on the person's mind.  Hence, more stress on the mind leads to greater depression and suicide, as we will show later on. This would mean that meditation and mindfullness exercises would boost the body's immune system.

Summary
Mediation not only strengthens the mind, but it also strengthens the body's immune system via the genes.  This shows that there exists a 3 way link between the mind, the immune system and preservation of the body's neurocognitive abilities. Also it is interesting to note that the ancient Taoist Texts state that the season of winter is the best season to calm the mind and meditate.

Solar Weather and The Mind
Numerous research studies have linked stronger geomagnetic activity to increased mental distubances (Are stress responses to geomagnetic storms mediated by the cryptochrome compass system?). I also outline these studies in greater detail in my book Solar Flares and Their Effect upon Behavour and Human Health . Geomagnetic activity exhibits seasonal cycles with seasonal low during summer (Biotropic effects of geomagnetic storms and their seasonal variations).

Hence, when geomagnetic activity is at lower levels, mental concentration and focus is strongest. This means that meditation during periods of quiet to low geomagnetic actiity may enhance the anti-aging effects of meditation.  As equipment becomes more and more sensitive, it would be interesting to do a scientific study performing mindfullness exercises when earth's geomagnetic energy is at above average levels and again when earth's geomagentic energy is at quit to low levels . The results should show a lengtehening of telemores ocuring from practicing mindfulness exercises or taking telemore lengthening herbs when earth's geomagnetic activity is quiet to low. compared to periods when geomagnetic storms are occuring. Once the technology matures to explore this hypotheiss, it should confirm this theory.  Hence, a stronger mind during quiet to low geomagnetic activity may reduce the rate at which ones ages.

Depression and Geomagnetic Activity
In a research study published in March 1994 titled: Geomagnetic storms: association with incidence of depression as measured by hospital admission, and conducted by R.W. Kay the study concluded that during times of higher than average geomagnetic activity, there was a significant 36.2% increase in males admitted to hospital with manic-depressive illness. Most admissions occurred during the second week following the geomagnetic storm compared to periods when geomagnetic activity was at normal to quiet levels.

In a study titled: Effect of month of birth on the risk of suicide that was published in June 2006 and conducted by Emad Salib and Mario Cortina Borja, the study found that people born April to June committed suicide more often then people born at other times of the year.  This is interesting because the Rocrucian Order teaches that the last 4 to 6 weeks before your birthday, events in your life may be more challenging then usual and that the body is more suseptible towards illness and injury during this time.  A few days after one's birthday the process reverses and for the next 4 to 6 weeks challenges in life are much less, health is at a peak and one is less suseptible to injury. Hence scientific studies have confirmed that people do indeed die more often just before their birthday (Death has a preference for birthdays—an analysis of death time series)

A Long Term Large Population Study Studying Spring Suicide and Higher Geomagnetic Activity

National suicide data for Australia from 1968 to 2002 involving 51,845 males and 16,327 females found that suicides peaked each spring for males and females.  The study also found that males were less likely to commit suicides during fall and that females were less likely to commit suicide during summer. When geomagnetic activity was at above average levels, females were most affected, exhibiting a significant increase during concurrent periods of geomagnetic storm activity (P = .01).  In males however, this pattern did not exist(P = .16).

Summary
Males may be more resistent to depression related effects caused by above average geomagnetic activity.

A study published in January 2004 titled Schizophrenia and season of birth: relationship to geomagnetic storms. and conducted by R.W. Kay, concluded that people born during winter and spring are more likely to suffer from Schizophrenia. Hence, these are both seasons where there is less sunlight.  Less sunlight means less melatonin is produced in the body (Less exposure to daily ambient light in winter increases sensitivity of melatonin to light suppression).Could it be that excess melatonin increases one's chance of Schizophrenia?. (Role of Melatonin in Schizophrenia)

Forms of Meditaiton
While this exercise I am about to share with you has not been scientfically confirmed to extend telemores, it is a simple form of meditative exercise that comes from an ancient tablet thousands of years old called the Emerald Tablets, Tablet #13, The Keys to Life and Death. The tablet states that doing the exercise will allow one to live to over 100 years of age.   In the near future when real time telemore monitoring technology becomes available, we may find that this exercise lengthens telomores either during or a short time after the exercise has been performed. The Emerald Tablets exercise, shown on my website is a great exercise that focuses the mind on 2 specific regions of the body and re-aligns the magnetic fields of the body.

Another form of exercise is a form of exercise called heart math rejuvenvity shown in my book Remote Viewing. The Complete User's Manual on Experiencing Future Consciousness.

Here are the steps

1 – Go into Heart Math coherernce
2 – Think back to when you were 17 to 21 years of age and tune into your heart beating
3 – Now think of the Mayer Waves that exist within those heart beats
4 – Next using Heart Math, breathe in / out visualizing those Mayer Waves coming from the past into the present momment
5 – Next take a 30 second to 2 minute pause
6 – Now think back again to when you were 17 or 21 years of age again.  If you are using the EM Wave 2, then you will find that the heartmath coherence will automatically begin as you think of your younger age the second time without you having to do anything. This is what I call the “rejuvenation coherence” state.
7 – Next take a 5 to 7 minute break and repeat the above exercise 3 times max.

This exercise works best when your emotional biorthythum is peaking.  This is because we are more in control of our emotions during this time. Hence, as we show in this paper, mind exercises such as meditation can actually slow aging.

What are Mayer Waves?

Meyer Waves are a background frequency signal within the beat of your heart.  They never loose their frequency or rhythum.  This frequency stays the same no matter what your age.

"3. What determines the frequency of Mayer waves? A common feature of Mayer waves is that their frequency is fairly stable within a given species. In particular, it has been shown in humans that this frequency does not depend on gender, age or posture [9,10,32,33]. Two theories have been proposed to explain the constancy of Mayer wave’s frequency"

"Mayer waves are oscillations of arterial pressure occurring spontaneously in conscious subjects at a frequency lower than respiration (¨0.1 Hz in humans). Mayer waves are tightly coupled with synchronous oscillations of efferent sympathetic nervous activity and are almost invariably enhanced during states of sympathetic activation"

Another key time is when the moon is in Apogee which is a time there is less stress on the heart. A research study titled: Effect of the moon on general practitioners' on call work load, that was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health in 1994 and conducted by Linda Macdonald, Peter Perkins and Ruth Pickering, examined the number of calls received by nursing staff at a private nursing home.  The study looked at calls covering all hours and included surgery calls. The study found that when the moon was at apogee, there were far less calls received by the nursing staff.

Herbs that are hard to grind act as NeuroProtective Herbs
Being the author of the book The Official Guidebook of How to Make Tinctures and Alchemy Spagyric Formulas, I had to do a lot of hand grinding for the herbs to make my tinctures/extracts.  One common trait that I have noticed throughout the years is that the harder the herb is to grind up, the more likely it is going to be a herb that preserves the brain's neurocognitive abiliites. As we shall show in this paper, these same herbs that are hard to grind also provide extreme protection in the joints of the body, making excellent arthirtus preventitives.

Two of the best examples are Rosemary and Skullcap.  If you have ever tried to grind these herbs up by hand in a mortar and pestle, you will know that is is almost impossible to get a fine powder from them and you have to end up using a mechanized coffee grinder. So let's take a look at the scientific studies regarding Rosemary and Skullcap and their abilities to preserve the brain's functioning. Another interesting obseration is that substances that are applied to moving parts to keep metals from wearing out are made of the driest and hardest materials known.  Examples include tungsten, boron and molybdenum. Because the herbs Rosemary and Skullcap are both extremly dry herbs that are hard to grind up, they also make excellent arthritus treatments or help prevent arthritus. Let's take a look at the scientific literature and see what it says.

Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis)

Rosemary

It is interesting to note that Olive Oil is a very dry oil and in my article, I show that Olive Oil (the olive tree thrives in dry conditions) has been successfully used by 3 people who rubbed it into the joints of their body.  These 3 people lived to over 100 years of age due to olive oil's ability to counteract arthritus. So Olive Oil makes it a great oil to rub into the joints of the body.

Rosemary and Olive Oil Synergy
Oleanic acid, which is a primary ingredient in Olive Oil, when mixed with Rosemary reduces arthritus (A pilot trial evaluating Meta050, a proprietary combination of reduced iso-alpha acids, rosemary extract and oleanolic acid in patients with arthritis and fibromyalgia).  It may be a good idea to add just a little oleanic acid to the olive oil when rubbing it into the joints of the body.

Boron
Boron is used as a dry lubricant in heavy industrial machinery. Boron is one of the strongest dry lubricants and reduces friction in moving parts. When boron supplements are taken, they enhance bone growth.  Honey for example is high in boron.Boron has been researched to be a healthy supplement for healthy knees and joints (Essentiality of boron for healthy bones and joints). Born has been linked to healthy brain cognitive performance (Dietary boron, brain function, and cognitive performance).

Summary
So in conclusion, the scientfic evidence shows that substances that preserve neurocognitive functioning of the brain extend lifespan possibly due to their ability to protect the brain against harsh environments, much like a dry lubricant protects heavy machinary in a hot environment. By taking these neurocognitive preservation substances, one can “ride the wave” of a stronger mind.  Also by practicing mindfullness exercises on a regular basis, this will also help strengthen the immune system, allow one to accept life's challenges more easily and eliminate depression and lengthen lifespan.

In the ancient Taoist texts, it states that the eyes are ruled by the liver and that emotions of anger are damaging to the eyes. Anger is an emotion that can arise from even the smallest things.  Our eyesight is one of the first weaknesses in the body as it ages. Taoist philosophy also states the liver is ruled by the season of spring. Spring happens to be the month that cases of depression and suicide peak.  Hence the opposite of anger is generosity. So practicing acts of generosity not only is benefical to our liver and eyes it also strengthens our mind.

Strengthening the Mind. From a Taoist Perspective

This section combines both the Taoist Perspective and Chinese Tradiational Medicine and how they both relate to emotions and the body's organs. When a person has an outburst of anger, which in some cases may stem from a person who uses their eyes too much, it is usually the result of an improperly functioning liver.  This in turn affects the eyes.

The eyes are a measure of a person's intelligence. Clever people tend to have large eyes, which are being used to constantly explore their surroundings. Hence good eye circulation may enhance IQ. Poor circulation of blood around  the eyes is usually the result of a period of inactivity and improper foods. One of the biggest contributors to poor eye-sight is damp heat that gathers in the eyes.  Glaucoma is really a form of water moisture that gets trapped between the lens of the eyes. This is caused by bad circulation.  One of the first signs of this sluggish circulation is "feeling chilly". Our body's are like the engine of a car, if we don't introduce cool liquids remove the heat, the blood begins to "boil" and "steam".

In traditional western medicine, we are taught that the liver is the body’s filter, and its purpose  is to remove toxins.  However there exists a spiritual side to our liver. In Taoist medicine, each organs has an emotional / spiritual component. The emotion of the liver is anger. Below is a simple list of the body's organs and their associated emotions

The Liver – Anger
The Lungs – Sadness & Grief
The Spleen – Over thinking & Worry
The Heart – Joy
The Kidneys – Fear

Any excess or imblance of any of these or a combination thereof causes an imbalance in our emotions.  Hence a healthy functionig liver, the more we are in control of our emotions.   Sudden outbursts of anger are a good indiccator that the liver is out of balance due to the emotions becoming unexpressed or repressed. Healthy releases of anger are good for us, but excessive long term outbursts are a sign of a serious problem.

Summary
HAVING emotions is not what causes disease. Emotions that are out of balance cause disease.  One simple way to quickly restore balance is to allow ourself to experience our emotions.  This can be done via the Emotional Freedom Technique or just by openly expressing how we feel. A healthy liver means our immune system is strong due to our liver being responsible for resisting exterior pathogens. Because the liver opens into the eyes, a healthy liver means your vision will be clear. Strong nails, the ability to recover quickly from physical activities, smooth movements and a flexible body are all signs of a strong liver.  People who show great courage and resoluteness, and can plan their lives wisely and effectively with a clear sense of direction also have strong and healthy livers.

Pprolonged feelings of frustration  and/or anger or that become unexpressed or repressed damage the liver.  Hence the opposite is true. A deficiency in the liver from an internal imbalance or external pathogenic factors makes one prone to feelings of frustration and anger. Honestly expressing our emotions regularly is the best method to keep this organ healthy. You’ll know you have achieved this balance next time you experience a stressful situation and you can just shrug it off and see the positive instead of going completly balsitic and destroying everything in lying your wake.

The Flow of Chi through the Liver

The Liver ensures the continued smooth flow of chi and controls the muscles and tendons. The end results of thsi flow show themselves strongest in the fingers and toe nails and the flow opens to the outside world through the eyes. It also is the seat of the Ethereal Soul. Additional symptoms of an unhealhty liver include: eczema, poor nourishment to the tissues, psoriasis of the skin, numbness, tremors, weak nails, muscle  cramps, Parkinson's disease, weak limbs, indigestion such as belching, sour regurgitation and constipation.  Speciif eye symptoms include: floaters, color blindness and myopia are treated as liver chi imbalances.  Other reported symptoms include, irritability, dizziness, sensation of floating just before sleeping, tinnitus and headache.

The Gall Bladder and the Liver

The Chi flowing through the liver produces its strongest effects on the Gall.Bladder meridian as it becomes blocked or stagnated. The Gall Bladder produces bile that digests fats which is regulated by the smooth flow of chi by the Liver. A poor functioning gall bladder will display the following - thirst, bitter tastes in the mouth, headache along with anger, frustration, impatience, resentment and irritability.  Other symptoms include: a craving for rich foods and alcohol drinks, scanty and dark yellow urine, feverish, chest pain, sick stomach from fatty and a dry mouth. The pulse will be slippery and the tongue greasy. Emotions related to the Gall Bladder include courage and initiative. This is why in Japanese lore a person who is a coward or timid, is referred to as having a "small G.B. (gall bladder)"

Healing Emotions - loving kindness, forgiveness, beneveloence

Color - Green

Season - Spring

Direction - East

Begin by putting the hands over the liver and "smile into it".  As you do so, become aware of any emotions of frustration, anger, exess heat or resentment in the liver region.  Next slowly inhale deeply and extend the arms up from your sides with your plams up.  As you raise the palms over the head, interlace the fingers together, turning the joined hands over and facing the sky with the palms upwards. Next put out through the heels of your palms and extend your arums up while keeping the shoulders relaxed. As you begin bending a little to your left, stretch the right arm slightly to gently expose the region of your liver.

Sound Exercise
Open your eyes as wide as you can and exhale.  As you exhale make the shound Shhhhhhhhhhhhh subvocally.  Feel any trapped excess heat, ilness, anger or negativity being expelled form the liver, riding out of the body on the breath. Once you have finished exhaling, close the eys and seperate the hands and turn your palms down, while you slowly lower the arms to the sides, leadin with the heels of your palms (lower wrist). Next smile and as you inhale, visualize a shiny sparkling green mist that illuminates the liver and gallbladder region.  Bring your hands to rest in the liver reagion and close your eyes and then smile into the liver.  As you breathe in, imagie fresh Chi (or life force energy) entering the liver and gallbladder. As you breathe out, mentally repeat the sound in your mind and emotions Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.Perform the above exercise at least 3 times and if you feel you are able, repeat up to 6, 9, 12 or even 24 times to remove extreme anger, detoxify the liver or to strengthen eyes or remove red or watery eyes.
